Rules for Exhibitors

All exhibits must be grown or made by the exhibitor, except where otherwise stated in the Schedule.
Completed entry form(s) (or entries sent by email or telephone) must reach one of the Show Secretaries by 10.00 am on Thursday 8th September. Please note that no entries will be accepted on the day of the Show.
Competitors may exhibit TWO entries per class (except in the Junior Section), but only the highest point awarded in that class will be counted.
Exhibits may be set up for display in the Moravian Church Hall between 7.30pm and 9pm on the Friday before the Show, or between 7am and 10.30am on the Saturday of the Show. Exhibitors will be asked to leave the hall by 10.30am. Exhibits cannot be accepted after this time.
Every exhibit must bear a card, obtainable from the Show Secretary on the Saturday of the Show. Exhibitors will be responsible for placing these cards beside their exhibits, with the entrant's name facing down, and for checking the accuracy of the information on them.
In this schedule the words KIND and VARIETY are used in the following way:
Potatoes and peas are distinct KINDS of vegetables.
Duke of York and Majestic are VARIETIES of potatoes.
The judges' decisions will be final. Any objection must be delivered in writing to the Show Secretary by 4.45pm on the day of the Show and must be accompanied by a deposit of £1 which will be refunded if the objection is upheld.
No exhibits may be altered or removed between 10.30am and 4.15pm. Exhibitors wanting to retain their entries must remove them between 4.15pm and 4.30pm. All exhibits remaining (with the exception of art/craft works) will be auctioned in aid of the Society unless contrary notice has been given by the exhibitor (using red stickers provided).
All exhibits, personal property etc. will be the responsibility of exhibitors and the Committee will not be liable for any loss, damage or personal injury due to any cause whatsoever.
All cups and trophies referred to in this schedule are challenge cups unless otherwise stated and shall be returned in good condition by Saturday 3rd September to one of the Show Secretaries.
A Novice is one who has not won a prize in the section they wish to enter i.e. vegetable or flower.

Novice Sections

You can enter any of the novice classes if you have not won a prize in that section before at this Show in previous years.
Even if, in a previous year, you have won a prize in the novice vegetable section you are still eligible to enter the novice flower section and vice versa.
Novices are also free to enter any of the other Vegetable, Chrysanthemum and Dahlia classes listed on the following pages, as well as the Fruit, Floral, Cookery and Novelty Sections.
Entries will be judged on presentation, quality and uniformity.

All pastry to be home-made and no cake mixes to be used.
Exhibitors may use their own choice of recipe and tin size.
Two entries submitted in a single class should be made to different recipes.

Junior Art Competition 2011

A special competition for art inspired by nature, gardens or allotments.
Paintings, craft, photographs, poems or other art can be entered.
Each display must not exceed 45x60cm. No frames please.

GARDEN NEWS TOP VASE 2011

Here are the rules and special notes for this class which is supported by Garden News and with prizes sponsored by Thompson and Morgan.

The Top Vase class is open to anyone who grows flowers and you don't have to be an award-winning exhibitor or flower arranger to take part.

Competition Rules

The Top Vase class is for a vase of mixed flowering stems containing a total of between 5 and 10 stems, taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plant.
Please note that it is two different KINDS of plants - two varieties of the same plant are NOT two kinds.
The display is judged out of a total of 35 points, split into: 25 points for colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display, and 10 marks for the overall presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase.
The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal rules used for other classes.
Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only; no seed-heads of berries will be allowed.
The vase can be any shape or size and made from any material, but must be in proportion to the display. No marks are awarded for the vase itself.
No accessories whatsoever - such as bows and additional foliage - will be allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to that stem, will be allowed. Packing material - including florist's foam - to keep the stems in place is allowed.

Notes for exhibitors and judges

Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant.
The different kinds of plants need to be taken from different genera. For instance, pinks, carnations and sweet william, which are all dianthus, would not be classed as different kinds.
Use only fresh, home-grown flowers. No dried or silk flowers allowed.
A vase, by definition, is any vessel that can be used to hold cut flowers and which is taller than it is wide at its widest point.
The Garden News Top Vase class is open for anyone to enter and is not intended purely for growers who regularly display in single species classes at shows.
Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Vase class, bearing in mind that entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors.
Please note that the display has to be viewed all round.
The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors' cards.
Any queries that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to and decided by, the Show officials.
Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification.

You can be involved in the CHADAHS 2011 Show in any of the following ways:

Plant and produce stall

The plant and produce stall is a popular part of the Show. You can help by donating for sale bags of fresh allotment vegetables, fruit and flowers or plants, cakes and jams. If you can help on the stall on the day of the Show please let the Show Secretaries know in advance. Please bring any items for the stall on the morning of the Show.

Exhibition area

An opportunity for plot-holders and their family and friends to display creative work with a horticultural theme. Photographic displays of your plot are particularly welcome. Please contact the Show Secretaries for further information on space available.

Raffle and Tombola

Do you have any items/unwanted gifts to donate as prizes for the raffle or the Tombola? If so, please drop these into your trading shed between now and the Sunday before the Show.

All proceeds raised will go toward the Show expenses and the Society.

Refreshments

The Show café is very popular and we hope you can help by donating cakes, biscuits and scones. Please bring these to the hall before 10.30am or after 2pm. Ian Green (Alexandra Palace site) is once again in charge of teas. Help making and serving refreshments on the day of the Show would be especially welcome - please let the Show Secretaries know in advance.

How to join CHADAHS

CHADAHS is the Central Hornsey Allotments And Horticultural Society, an association of local allotment holders and gardeners. Allotment holders are mainly from the Alexandra Palace and Shepherds Hill sites and gardeners are from the local area.

The society is managed by an elected committee.

Society members are able to purchase garden products at discount prices from the two Allotment Trading Sheds that are open on Sunday mornings at the Alexandra Palace and Shepherds Hill sites. There is a wide range of items for sale, discounted by up to 35%. These include seeds and onion sets, composts, fertilisers, bamboo canes and netting.

Membership of the Society gives an opportunity to learn and share knowledge and expertise with other local gardeners and allotment holders.

In addition to the Annual Show, the Society organises visits to gardens and nurseries.

Membership is only £2 a year.

You can join the Society at one of the trading sheds open every Sunday (alternate Sundays in winter):

Shepherds Hill 11 am - 1pm (11 am - 12 noon in winter)
