Seed savers and sharers scheme
We are trying out a scheme to share seeds.
Why save seeds and share?
-
Many older varieties are no longer available commercially.
-
You can try a new plant without expense.
-
Find a good home for part-used packets of seed!
-
You can be sure that a saved-seed plant can be grown successfully on our soil.
There is a box for seeds at both of our Trading Sheds. Donations of seeds are
welcomed, and no charge is made for any you wish to take, though we would ask
that you consider 'completing the loop' by growing a few plants in a place
where they can be allowed to stand and set seed, collecting some seed and
giving back to the scheme.
We will shortly be placing information on seed saving, including methods, best
storage, how long different seeds stay viable, and which F1 varieties can be
collected etc.
Two sizes of seed packets will soon be available for you to print.
We will also shortly be setting up an email list for updates and other useful
information related to seed saving. A number of people signed up for this at
our Summer Show - let us know if you'd like to be added. You'll be able to
remove yourself should you wish to.
Seed potatoes
Late Autumn and Winter are the time to think about your 2009 potatoes!
Here are some
flavour and growing notes
on over 40 varieties together with details of how to chit and plant. We are
sorry, but we have stopped taking member's orders now. However, there will be a
few spare 'nets' of seed potatoes available from both Trading Sheds in January
due to the minimum purchase numbers of our supplier. Also, January is the time
when you will find the widest range available in local garden shops. We list
one local supplier who stocks a wide range, but if you know of others with a
good range, please let us know, and we will happily add them.
