Seed savers and sharers scheme

We are trying out a scheme to share seeds.

Why save seeds and share?

  • Many older varieties are no longer available commercially.
  • You can try a new plant without expense.
  • Find a good home for part-used packets of seed!
  • You can be sure that a saved-seed plant can be grown successfully on our soil.
There is a box for seeds at both of our Trading Sheds. Donations of seeds are welcomed, and no charge is made for any you wish to take, though we would ask that you consider 'completing the loop' by growing a few plants in a place where they can be allowed to stand and set seed, collecting some seed and giving back to the scheme.

We will shortly be placing information here on seed saving, including methods, best storage, how long different seeds stay viable, and which F1 varieties can be collected etc.

Two sizes of seed packets will be available for you to print (see instructions below). The smaller one is here now in PDF format: small seed saving packet.

Instructions: print page 1 (of the 2 pages) onto A4 paper, then take the printed sheet of paper and put it back in the printer so that you can print page 2 on the same side but from the bottom of the paper.

We will also shortly be setting up an email list for updates and other useful information related to seed saving. A number of people signed up for this at our Summer Show - let us know if you'd like to be added. You'll be able to remove yourself should you wish to.

Seed potatoes

Now is the time to think about your 2011 potatoes! Please see our potatoes pages , where there will be flavour and growing notes on around 35 varieties together with printable also online order forms, and details of how to chit (sprout) and grow them.

Allotment Cookbook

The Allotment Cookbook is a nicely printed booklet with numerous favourite and reliable recipes for your produce and illustrated with home-grown artwork. It is sold for charity for £2.
